Asechemie (1997) found the persistence of traditional values in African accounting systems in the informal economic sector. Accounting has also been found to be a useful tool for shaping cultural identities (Constable & Kuasirikun, 2007). Traditional and capitalist mode of operation were embraced by the colonial states and evolved from merchants’ capital to exports of commodities to imperialism (Hindes & Hirst, 1977). Accounting has been said to support slavery in the British empire and a means of wielding control in plantations from far distances and has served as a vital means of subjecting activities to control (Anniesette & Neu, 2004; Bush & Maltby, 2004; Tyson, Fleischman, & Oldroyd, 2004).
Given that the papers in this volume are based on the work presented at the inaugural conference of the AAFA, it is likely that with time, research based on other African countries will begin to emerge. In conclusion, we hope that this special issue will encourage debates and more research in accounting in Africa. The papers in the volume have provided wide ranging empirical and theoretical issues that will have policy implications and also generate future academic debates. This involved semi-structured interviews, observation, document analyses and a focus group discussion. The paper concludes that formal internal controls such as budgets, performance evaluation and rewards and staff recruitment operate alongside informal internal controls including beliefs systems, values and existing norms. In particular the study reports that forms of informal controls such as trust were found to be important in the organisation where superiors in certain instances assigned responsibilities to members of their teams not on the basis of their abilities or skills but because the member could be trusted.
